The first recorded lordship belonged to Lord Henry Hastings during the English Civil War which occurred between 1642 and 1651. He was considered infamous for his support of King Charles I during the Civil War, and later lost an eye to a pistol shot during that same war. He was known from then on as “Blind Henry Hastings” but he steadfastly refused to acknowledge the nickname.
In 1846, the manor of the village was turned over to the Marquis of Hastings, where it has remained since.
