The village of Coningsby lies in the East Lindsey district of Lincolnshire just eight miles south of the town of Horncastle. To the wet are the Lincolnshire wolds and the Fens lie to the east. The River Bain marks the western edge of Coningsby, where the village of Tattershall begins.

The name Coningsby comes from the Old Norse word ‘konungr’ meaning “King.” Combined with the Old Norse suffix ‘-by’ denoting “the settlement of,” Coningsby literally means “The Settlement of the King.” Certainly, the area has been inhabited since long before the time of the Viking invasions.

Coningsby is home to RAF Coningsby, one of the most important airbases or the Royal Air Force. Three squadrons of aircraft are stationed here, along with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. The Coningsby church clock is the largest such one-handed clock, measuring over 16 feet in diameter. The clock hand itself is nearly 9 feet in length.  

The clock face is painted directly onto the tower’s stone wall.  The pendulum of the clock is so massive that it completes a swing only once every two seconds. Very few such one-handed church tower clocks exist in Britain. Near the church are historic Tattershall Castle and the associated medieval college.  

Coningsby houses the Moorside Motorcycle Museum as well as the Pingle Nature Reserve. Locals and visitors alike enjoy walking through the grassland and wild flower meadows so close to Coningsby. A disused portion of the old Lincoln to Skegness rail line serves as a walkway past meadows, wet woodlands and a large pond.
