History

Potterhanworth is both a village and civil parish. The civil parish includes the hamlet of Potterhanworth Booths. A population of 648 in 257 households was recorded in a 2001 census.

The Domesday survey has a record of Potterhanworth and in it the village is recorded as Haneworde. During that time, Potterhanworth was part of the Wapentake  of Langoe.

It became known as Potter Hanworth in 1334 because there was a large pottery in the area. It was only in the 20th century that the two words were combined.

There is also evidence of a Roman Pottery Kiln in the area. Traces of Roman life was found through the discovery of scattered Roman pottery as well as a hoard of Roman coins.

Attractions

There are quite a few old structures in Potterhanworth, and here are a few of them:

·    St Andrew's Church. The church is an impressive structure but is a complete rebuilt. It underwent rebuilding first in 1749 and the second one happened in 1855. The church's tower is nicely decorated and it also features interesting stained glass windows.

·    Potterhanworth Water Tower. It's hard to miss this structure if you drive through. It's a large red-brick building located in the middle of the village. The structure dates back to 1910 and is not being used as a water tower anymore. Today, the structure functions as a private dwelling.
