Skellingthorpe is a small village that is 3 miles (5km) from Lincoln city centre in the English county of Lincolnshire. It may only be a small village, but Skellingthorpe has a strong sense of history. It is situated in ancient woodland that is filled with natural flora and beautiful scenes. If that was not enough, Doddington Hall is only 1 mile (1.6km) away from the village. Doddington Hall and gardens are open to the public showing a wonderful scene of flora.
The earliest history of Skellingthorpe is at present unknown but there is evidence that a Roman settlement were in the area in C12 AD. The recording in the Doomsday book in 1086 records Skellingthorpe as 960 acres of plough land, common pasture, common land and woodland. During the 13th Century, there has been a place of worship as Robert de Weinflet was recorded as chaplain to the Church of Skellingthorpe in 1225.
Throughout its long history, Skellingthorpe has seen many historic events in the village including:
· Queen Eleanor’s funeral cortege in 1290
· Arguments on who owned Skellingthorpe in the 14th Century
· A murder in 1392 as John Robyn was imprisoned for murdering John de Ounesby
· Robberies and plundering in and around Skellingthorpe in 1610 including the parish
· Extensive flooding in 1770 and 1816
· 1817 attempts of Methodism failed but later a Methodist chapel was established

· Railway line used to pass through Skellingthorpe from 1897
· Skellingthorpe and Doddington were bombed by German Zeppelins between 1915 and 1918
· King George V and Queen Mary slept in royal train in Skellingthorpe
· 1955 Skellingthorpe railway station closed after a serious accident at Skellingthorpe
As well as having a colourful history, Skellingthorpe is also surrounded by ancient woodland known as Old Wood. Old Wood is a natural woodland home to ancient oaks, conifers and lime woodland. Old Wood merges with Old Hag Wood. At the point where the two merge, there is an information board that states how the woodland floor is covered by bluebells, Lilly of the valley and yellow orchids in spring. In summer months’ dog’s mercury and enchanter nightshade is prominent.
Doddington Hall and gardens lies only 1 mile away from Skellingthorpe village. Doddington Hall and its gardens are open to the public. Special events are held at Doddington Hall every spring and summer. The gardens are open to the public on Sundays from February through until March. The house and gardens are open to the public on Wednesdays, Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays from March, 27th until September 28th. The gardens are also open on Sundays throughout October.
