HISTORY

The site where Trafford Centre stands was owned by the Manchester Ship Canal Company until 1986. That was when John Whittaker of Peel Holdings acquired the company. He had plans of building an out-of-town shopping centre and saw that vision realized after a long and expansive planning process.

The location of the centre presented a couple of problems. For one, the effect of the centre on retailers in smaller towns and villages in the Greater Manchester area was considered. Also, potential traffic issues were raised due to the location being close to the M60 motorway. All these considered, the House of Lords voted in favour of the development in 1996.
