Surfing Conditions in Aberavon

Roughly sixty years ago, an estate development began adjusting and configuring the dune structure along the shores of Aberavon, with a reinforced sea wall covering nearly two miles of the breaking stretch. The estates were built to accommodate the rising population of the town, as a side effect, the safety breakers affected the swells and breakwaters of the incoming waves. This increased the roll of the breakers, making it a prime spot for cold water long and short boarding popular not only with local youth, but surfing enthusiast all across Great Britain.

To support this growing tourist draw, Aberavon’s town council began making additional holiday destination improvements, including a six screen cinema, a piazza for boutiques and evening strolls, as well as a skateboard park. An amphitheater provides live performances weather permitting, so visitors can be assured of an enjoyable time while visiting.

Kite Trail Sculpture

The focal point of the Aberavon seaside community is often recognized in the Kite Trail sculpture, an elegant and sweeping display centered on the seafront. At 12 metres high and weighing in at over 11 tonnes, the Kite Trail sculpture is the largest free standing art display in Wales. Designed by resident Carmarthenshire sculptor and artist Andrew Rowe, the Kite Tail has been a place of reflection and wonder since its installation in 2007.
