In North Yorkshire, there is a village of less than a hundred people, called Birkby. Despite being one of the smallest villages not just in the area, but in the entire country, this area has a rich history. When it was first mentioned in the Domesday Book, it was noted down as being called “Bergbi.” It’s easy to see how this word could morph, over time, into Birkby. The name seems to be Old Norse, meaning “Bretar’s farm.”

When the Normans invaded, the manor in the area was owned by Earl Edwin, but was subsequently turned over to the crowd. The manor was then given to the Lord of Northallerton, until a lordship for the manner was specifically given to Henry de Farlington. The manor then bounced between a few different families, from the de Lisle, to the Scrope, to the Grimston family, who held the manor house until the early 1800s. Prior to the manor house and the small village that gathered around it, there was likely a medieval settlement, which was likely sustained by fishing and agricultural.

One of the oldest buildings in the area is the St. Peter’s church, which was built in 1776. Renovations done later seem to reveal that there was once an even grander church built on this spot.
