History

The name Wigglesworth is said to have Saxon origins, with “wicel” being the name of a person or “wincel” meaning “of the child.” “Worth” is derived from the Anglo-Saxon workd “wory” which is pronounced “worth.”

The village is mentioned in the Domesday Book when the Manor of (Long) Preston owned about 120 acres of it and 150 more was in Rathmell. Later on, the Manor was in the possession of the monks of Fountains Abbey. It was given to them by William, the son of Godfrey de Neversheim.

The estate was then passed through generations of families. And during the 18th century, it was owned by the Weddell family who were in residence at Newby Hall. The estate passed to the 3rd Lord Grantham – cousin of William Weddell – when Weddel passed.

Wigglesworth Estate was owned by Lord Lucas and his sister, Lady Lucas, by the end of the 19th century. When Lord Lucas died during the First World War, his sister sold the estate in small lots.

Today, Wigglesworth continues to maintain the character and feel of a village, a fact that is appreciated by both residents and visitors.
