Flower Delivery to Bedlington by Clare Florist

A former mining town, Bedlington lies roughly 10 miles north of Newcastle upon Tyne, its nearest city. It's also 4.5 miles southeast of the county town of Morpeth. Other nearby places include Ashington to the north northeast, Blyth to the east and Cramlington to the south. The parish of Bedlington was part of the historic enclave of County Durham called Bedlingtonshire.

The town is known for giving its name to a breed of dog, the Bedlington Terrier.

History

The name “Bedlington” was first attested in 1050 in a biography of Saint Cuthbert. It appears as “Bedlingtun” which means “the town of Bedla's people.”

Cutheard, the bishop of Durham, bought Bedlington and its accompanying hamlets between 900 and 915. Although Bedlington belonged to the county of Northumberland, it became part of the county palatine of Durham where Bishop Walcher had royal rights as granted by William the Conqueror.

In 1536, these rights were taken from Cuthbert Tunstall, Bishop of Durham. Bedlington, along with the rest of his properties, lost its special privileges. It was, however, confirmed to him in 1541 with the other property of his predecessors.

In 1866, Bedlington was made over to ecclesiastical commissioners along with the other lands of the see of Durham. For civil purposes, Bedlingtonshire was made part of Northumberland by acts of parliament in 1832 and 1844.

Bedlington became an industrial town and had iron works and a couple of coal mines. However, in the latter part of the 20th century, the closure of these industries caused the town to undergo many changes. It became more of a dormitory town for those who work in surrounding areas.

Events

Bedlington takes part in the Northumbria in Bloom competition where the community takes part in horticultural projects to enhance the appearance of the town. The Bedlington in Bloom committee are the ones in charge in town. Through the initiative, people now see quite a number of flowers in Bedlington.

The town also has a weekly Bedlington Market Day that happens every Thursday. Traditional market stalls are put up where a wide range of products are sold such as clothes, household goods, plants and fruits and vegetables.

Parks and Open Spaces

Bedlington Country Park – This is a 57 hectare woodland and grassland on the north banks of the River Blyth. The park is a steep sloping, natural wooded valley than runs from the old Bedlington Iron Works site at Furnace Bridge to Attlee Park at the bottom of Bedlington Bank.

Although it is no guarantee to see wild animals, you might just get lucky and spot some of these: red squirrel, rabbit, bank vole, fox and Roe deer.

Lovers of horticulture will enjoy several Bedlington flowers such as primrose, buttercip, common spotted orchid and much more.

Things to Do

Space to Play – This is an activity centre and adventure sports venue in Bedlington. It is a great place to take the children to have fun. There is an indoor soft play area and a cafe.
