Around the 7th century, Besselsleigh is the Leigh in the possession of a Saxon by the name of Earmund. The Leigh Manor was then passed down to Thomas Bessels family around the mid-14th century and come the next century, this village was known to be Besselsleigh.

There were a number of notable events in Besselsleigh, but one of the famed events was that event from the 14th of March 1944. It was on this day when the pilot of an Armstrong Whitworth Whitley V bomber aircraft lost control. The aircraft then crashed right at Great Park Farm in Besselsleigh and immediately burst to flames killing all the aircraft’s crew.
