Pembrokeshire is a county located on the farthest southwestern arm of Wales, bordered by sea on three sides. Its area comprises over 1,590 square kilometres, with 124,000 residents. Carmarthenshire is located to the east, with Ceredigion to the northeast. The County Council’s headquarters are located in Haverfordwest. English is commonly spoken, with Welsh being spoken in the north.

The Pembrokeshire Coast National Park is the only national coastal park in the UK, and one of three National Parks located in Wales. The beaches of this park have received many awards over the years. The coastline is a popular spot for seabird breeding, and offers many bays and sandy beaches for tourists. There are over 300 kilometres of walking trails on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path.

There is also a natural harbour and large estuary at Milford Haven and many bays, such as Fishguard Bay, St. Bride’s Bay, and Carmarthen Bay, with many small islands off the coast.

The history of Pembrokeshire dates back to 125,000 BCE. Pembrokeshire has many prehistoric places, including Pentre Ifan, an ancient manor in Nevern. It features several long blocks of stones, and is on the Scheduled Ancient Monument list.

During the late Roman Empire times, an Irish tribe called the Deisi settled in the region around 350 to 400. They called their realm the Demetae. They eventually merged with the local Welsh peoples, with the name changing to Dyfed. Elen married Hywel Dda in 904, effecting a name change to Deheubarth, which means southern district.

This region suffered many Viking raids during these times. The Vikings established their own settlements at Fishguard, Caldey Island, and Haverfordwest.

Between 1067 and 1111 many Norman and Flemings invaded the region. The Pembroke Castle was built in the cantref of Penfro in 1093. It was often called Penbroke in the past. In 1457 Henry Tudor was born at the Castle. He defeated the army of Richard III during the Battle of Bosworth Field, and became Henry VII of England, founding the House of Tudor, which ruled England until 1603.

There have been many shipwrecks off the coastline of Pembrokeshire. The earliest established lifeboat station occurred in 1822. Shipwreck diving is a popular sport in this county.

The main industries in Pembrokeshire are tourism, agriculture, and milling. In the past, mining of slate and stone was popular, but industry stopped in the 20th century. Fishing was also a popular industry of the past. Today, petrochemical and liquid natural gas industries employ many people in the Milford Haven Waterway area.

There are a large number of theme and animal parks in the county, including the Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo, Manor House Wildlife Park, and Oakwood Theme Park.

The Pembrokeshire Fish Week is held annually. In 2014 there were over 31,000 visitors to the event.
