Send flowers to loved ones in BreconThe historic market town of Brecon in Southern Powys, Mid Wales, sits at the point where two rivers, the Usk and the Honduu meet. It is a popular holiday destination for people visiting the Brecon Beacons where it nestles in the foothills.
On the northern edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park, Brecon has spectacular views of the wild, majestic hills including Pen-y-Fan, the highest point in the southern Britain at nearly 3,000 feet. From Brecon, you can ride the vintage steam locomotives of the Brecon Mountain Railway into the National Park along the length of the Taf Fachan reservoir to Dol-y-Gaer. Brecon is also at the head of the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal which runs 35 miles to Pontnewydd in Cwmbran and onto Newport.
Brecon was once a walled town with stone walls and four gatehouses built to protect the town during the 13th century. Today only remnants remain after the walls were mostly destroyed during the English Civil War. Brecon Castle is Norman in origin, like Brecon itself. The castle dates back to the 11th century but now only ruins remain. The adjoining house however was restored early in the 19th century when it was extensively renovated to become a hugely popular hotel with Victorians holidaying in the town.
Brecon itself has narrow winding streets and passageways and beautiful Georgian and Jacobean buildings. The town also has a modest Cathedral set in a walled close; unique in Wales.
