The civil parish of Muchelney is a clustered village located in Somerset, England. Muchelney is just one mile from Langport and four miles from Somerton. The village has varying elevations that range between 8 meters and 12 meters. To the southeast is a hamlet by the name of Muchelney Ham which gets its name from the main village. According to a census that was taken in 2011, Muchelney has about 195 people residing in the civil parish. There are 78 homes in the village and many of them are also businesses which are run by the families that live there. The majority of these businesses are family farms which grow crops that are later sold to local markets.  

The land that Muchelney sits on has been inhabited since the pre-medieval era. The first known record of the village can be found in the Domesday Book of 1086 where it was recorded as “Micelenie.” This is an Old English word that means “the increasingly great island.” The reason it is referred to as an island is because it is a village that lies within the Somerset Levels. This is a region of Somerset that used to be wetlands at one point. Most of the villages in this area were surrounded by marshes and floods. Since Muchelney used to be surrounded by water, it was referred to as an island. However, the wetlands of Somerset Levels were eventually drained so there is no more water surrounding the village now.

The most popular site in the village is Muchelney Abbey which holds the ruins of many old abbey buildings such as the Abbott’s House. These structures were built between the 7th century and 16th century. But it was in 1536 when King Henry VIII enacted the Dissolution of the Monasteries which was a legal process where many monasteries were demolished and their assets were taken in order to finance the king’s military campaigns.
