Puckington is a quiet village in South Somerset, located ten miles south-east of Taunton and ten miles west of Yeovil. It is also a civil parish and, as such, incorporates the tiny hamlet of South Bradon into its boundaries too. The name Puckington is a reference to the initial habitation of the area, dating back to Anglo-Saxon times and is roughly translated as 'the settlement of Puca's people.' The parish was held by Mulchelney Abbey until the Norman Conquest, at which point it came under the control of Roger de Courcelles. It changed hands many times over the next 500 years or so, moving between a succession of families until, following the Duke of Suffolk's execution in 1553, it reverted back to the Crown. It was then owned by the Portman family of nearby Orchard Portman and formed a part of the 'hundred' of Abdick and Bulstone.
