The church in Loversall dates back to the medieval period, but records from the region only begin in the 19th century. The lack of record keeping can be explained by the events that happened on 7 and 8 February 1844. This is when thieves broke into the church, opened the parish chest (maybe hoping to steal the communion plate) but when they found nothing of value, they made a fire to warm themselves as it happened to be winter. They used the oak chest as fuel and most of the contents – which included parish registers – burned along with it.

But not all was lost as parishes were required to send yearly returns to the bishop of the diocese. The records of Loversall were sent to York, and these can be found at the Borthwick Institute of Historical Research.

In 19 October 1979, Loversall was designated as a conservation area. It has five listed structures and the character of the area is that of a small open grained village of traditional limestone buildings with clay pantile roofs. Here are the buildings within the conservation area:

Church of St Katherine – a small and picturesque Grade II structure. It's a popular church for marriage ceremonies. It was built before 1207 by the Fossard family.

Tomb Chest – a graveyard that lies within the churchyard. It's a Grade II listed property.

Grave Slab – another graveyard that also happens to be Grade II listed.

Loversall Hall – a Grade II listed structure.

Dovecote – another Grade II listed structure.
