Flower Delivery to Southam: A Thriving Market Town in South Warwickshire

A beautiful countryside setting, regular markets, and a collection of historical structures are just a few things that Southam has going for it. The town has a rich heritage, with a history as a Royal manor back in AD 998. It has good transport links to many major centres and is not far away from the towns of Leamington Spa and Rugby. A visit to Southam presents opportunities to see not only lovely villages but also do some fun outdoor activities.

History

Southam was a Royal manor prior to Ethelread the Unready granting it to Earl Leofwine in AD 998. It is listed in the Domesday Book as “Sucham.” The town was under the Coventry Priory (later Coventry Cathedral) from the 11th century to the 16th century, when the cathedral had to give up its estates the Crown during the Dissolution of the Monasteries.

Attractions

Historical sites are a feature in Southam. There’s a good mixture of Tudor structures as well as buildings dating back to the 17th century. Oxford Street, Market Hill, High Street, and Coventry Street offer an interesting selection of independent stores. Cafes, takeaways, and pubs are also a feature in town.

Southam hosts a weekly outdoor market every Tuesday morning while a monthly Farmer’s Market is staged every second Saturday of the month. Nearby markets are also accessible, one being in Banbury which is accessible from a bus service in Southam. The nearby Cotswold village of Moreton is another popular market held every Tuesday as well. Weekly markets are also held in Leamington Spa, Stratford-upon-Avon, Rugby, Warwick, and Kenilworth.

Southam is a good base for discovering the Stratford that Shakespeare lived in, along with seeing castles in Warwick and the impressive cathedral in Coventry. But the beauty of the town’s setting can be best experienced by going for a walk. The trails offer opportunities to see flowers in Southam as well as other places of interest. A winner of Britain in Bloom, there’s a good chance you’ll see some lovely Southam flowers in town without heading too far.

One of the most interesting walks is the Holy Well Walk, a circular walk that covers the scenic Stowe Valley all the way up to Holy Well then through the Stoneythorpe estate before heading back to town.

Southam is a town with lots of history, and the best way to see the remnants of the past is by taking the Southam Town Trail. A few of the structures that can be seen on this route include St James’ Church and The Manor House, where King Charles I stayed during the first year of the English Civil Wars.
