Capel St. Mary is listed in the Domesday Book as being part of the larger manor of Boynton. It is first mentioned by name as its own village a 13th century church document. Its name comes from Latin, ‘capele,’ meaning chapel. There is archaeological evidence of settlement in the village as early as the Bronze Age and Roman settlement.

Capel St. Mary was once a busy medieval village. During the 13th century, there was a large fortified house in the village that is believed to be one of the first fortified houses made of brick in the region. It no longer stands today.
