A village and parish in Midlothian, Scotland, the area is mostly a farming land where rolling landscapes, a couple of reservoirs, a few historic sites can be found. Not only that, there are several country walks available too, as well as access to the Moorfoot Hills and views of the Pentlands, Edinburgh and Fife.

In short, it's quite the destination for those who love the outdoors. Whether it is to take photographs of some Temple flowers or see some ancient structures, Temple is surely more than just a small town for any visitor.

Blessed with history and a wonderful environment, Temple makes a great holiday destination for those who are seeking a temporary reprieve from the stress of the city.

The Parish of Temple was divided into three parts: the ancient parish of Clerkington, and the Chapelries of Moorfoot and Balantrodach. Monks from the Newbattle Abbey held both Clerkington and Moorfoot while Balantrodach was a Chapelry of the famous military order, the Knights Templar.

Hugues de Payens, the first Grand Master of the order, met with David I in Scotland in 1127. He was granted the lands of Balantrodach and this was their principal seat and Preceptory in Scotland until the order was suppressed between 1307 and 1312.

As part of the Papal Bull called Ad providam, the Templars were abolished in England and Scotland. In addition, all of their property was to be seized and given to the Knights Hospitaller or the Knights of St John who had a Scottish seat in Torphichen in West Lothian.

Some of the Templars assimilated with The Order of St John and they continued this way until the Reformation.

After the Reformation, the present parish of Temple was formed from the three divisions. The name Temple was taken from the Knights Templar who once made part of the parish their seat.

From the 18th to 19th centuries, Temple was mainly a busy farming community with several shops and services. Now, it's more of a dormitory village for nearby Edinburgh.
