History of South Shields

The very first evidence of human settlement occurred during the Stone age when pre-historic tribes migrated through the area. The Romans built a fort in what is now South Shields around 160 AD and then expanded it around fifty years later when Hadrian’s Wall was being constructed. Although the fort was abandoned by the 4th century AD, many of the ruins still exist.

The presence of the fort helped create a permanent settlement and after the Romans left it was expanded upon to include a monastery where the Church of St. Hilda now stands. In the 9th century, Vikings raided the area which managed to survive and thrive afterwards. By the 13th century, the modern elements of the city started to be put into place. The area became a fishing port and the industry of salt-panning became established which unfortunately polluted the surrounding environment.

South Shields was also an important part of the English Civil War with several raids and small skirmishes taking place around the city. By the 19th century, South Shields was known for its coal mining, glass making, and production of alkaline materials which created an economic boom. The coastal location also brought in modern ship building.
However, the location also made South Shields a prime target during World War I with a Zeppelin attack and the city was repeatedly bombed by the Nazis during World War II. After the war, the traditional industries have given way to ship repair, offshore businesses, and tourism.
