HISTORY

In 1754, the first turnpike road was built. It ran from Market Harborough to Coventry via Lutterworth. As a result of its opening, the town experienced a long period of commercial development. New businesses were also put up including blacksmith and wheelright businesses.

Another turnpike road was built in 1812 from the Bridge at Rugby to Hinckley and the toll gates were located at Newbold on Avon and Pailton.

The introduction of the Enclosure Act in 1761 resulted in many disputes and as a result, the location of many farms in Pailton was shaped by these conflicts.

ATTRACTIONS

The village of Pailton's last pub, The White Lion, closed down in 2014. But in the past, there were three of them, including The Plough and The Fox and they all served as coaching inns as well.

One of the landmarks in Pailton is the restored war memorial located on the village green. There is also a radio transmitting station about one mile east of the village.
