Bathgate is a former industrial town in West Lothian, Scotland and just 12 miles from Edinburgh Airport. Though best known for its coal, oil and chemical industries in the 19th centuries – this town built the world's first oil refinery – it has a history dating over one thousand years.

Bathgate's name derives from "a house in the wood". The town was founded in the 11th century but became an important Scottish centre in the 14th century, when Robert the Bruce built a castle here for his daughter Marjorie. The offspring of her marriage to the High Steward of Scotland produced the Stewart dynasty that would rule over Scotland until the late 17th century.

The town later sank into obscurity as just a coaching stop between Glasgow and Edinburgh until the 19th century. This was when James "Paraffin" Young discovered that mineral oil could be processed from the local coal. Later he found that more oil could be produced from the abundant oil shales around the town. So began Scotland's and Britain's, first "oil boom".

Steelworks and chemical works followed in the wake of the oil boom but by the 1960s, much of this traditional industry was in decline. Bathgate was located too far away from both markets and components suppliers to industry.

Many of the old industrial sites were cleared for residential developments in the wake of the 1990s property boom. Bathgate Meadow Park hosts the annual West Lothian Highland Games on the last Saturday in May. Bathgate residents also open up their private gardens to the general public as part of the Scotland's Garden Scheme charity. Three generations of some Bathgate gardening families have won the prize of "West Lothian Gardener of the Year", the region's most prestigious gardening competition.
