A Proud History

Rustington has been occupied since the Bronze Age. In the Domesday Book, it is mentioned as a part of land given to Roger de Montgomery, who became Lord of the Manor. Since then, it was a small agricultural community until machinery took over in the 19th century. Newly built railways and its close proximity to the sea attracted more visitors and settlers to the area. In order to meet the increasing demand for housing, a brickfield was constructed in 1867. At the same time, nurseries where glasshouse crops were grown replaced farmlands. These businesses provided more work opportunities in the locality.

Rustington also played a part in international history. In World War I, an American aerodome was built in the village. In World War II, Canadian and American troops were billeted there.  

Evidence of the old days can still be seen in the remaining local historical structures and the displays at their museum. Going around the village you will see that Rustington is evidently proud of its history.
