Situated on the River Calder, Brighouse is a town about 4 miles east of Halifac in the Pennines. Junction 25 of the M62 motorway, as well as the Brighouse railway station on the Caldervale Line and Huddersfiled serve the town.

The town got it's name (“Bridge House”) from a building on or near the bridge over the River Calder. It was a hamlet of Rastrick – a nearby village – in its early history.

Brighouse is twinned with Lüdenscheid in Germany.

HISTORY

A river crossing called Snake Hill Ford was said to be part of the Roman route between Wakefield and Manchester. In 1275, Rastrick Bridge – a wooden structure – was recorded. It was replaced by another made of timber that John Hanson donated in 1514. In 1558, a stone replacement was funded by Hanson's son.

The flour milling industry and the textile mills in Brighouse were powered by the river.

In 1757, the Calder and Hebble Navigation was constructed and its engineer was John Smeaton. This establishment boosted industry in Brighouse.

The building of Calder Bridge or Brighouse Bridge was made possible through the Halifax and Huddersfield Turnpike Act of 1823. The bridge was made over the river and what is now part of the A641 road. In 1875 and 1999, tolls were abolished and by 1905, extensive widening work was performed.
