Coombe Bissett is a village and civil parish in the English county of Wiltshire. With a population of 675 in 2011, this is most certainly a quiet town.

The village exists within the River Ebble valley, which according to Saxon records, was a prosperous town. This valley was comprised of both Coombe Bissett and Homington until 1934, where Homington was finally absorbed by Coombe Bissett. The Domesday Book, an engraving published in 1900, was first transcribed in 1086 by order of King William the Conqueror. This book divided the River Ebble valley into eight manors, which can be observed today.

A medieval packhorse bridge still stands today, crossing the Ebble to Coombe Bissett. Today, it’s simply a footbridge but it was built originally for packhorses carrying goods and other valuables.

The two Anglican structures built in Coombe Bissett are still served by the Chalke Valley team ministry (the Chalke valley is synonymous with the River Ebble valley). The first being St Michael’s, where the oldest parts of the church were built in the 12th century. It was restored in 1845 and is listed today as a Grade I building, meaning it holds exceptional interest.

The second church is St Mary’s church which dates from the 14th century. It too was restored in the 1860’s and is a Grade II listed building, meaning it’s a special building of more than special interest.
