Durringtion is a relatively big village and civil parish locayed in Wiltshire County in South England. The closest city to Durrington is Salisbury which is about 10 miles south of Durrington and Swindon (30 miles north).

Durrington is known as a village with long and rich history which dates back to prehistory. The area was settled since Neolithic times although there is no evidence that people have lived here in continuity. The village itself has two sites from the Neolithic era – Woodhenge and Durrington Walls. What is even more interesting is that the famous ancient monumental structure Stonehenge is located about 2 miles from Durrington. Although this area was occupied by the Saxons there is a limited amount of evidence for this period probably because most of the structures were built from wood. Durrington is mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086 as an area with two estates. The village was hit by a devastating fire in the beginning of the 15th century, but this didn’t stop the growth of this village. Durrington was influenced by the presence of military in this area in the 20th century. According to the last census, this village has a population of 5021.

The village has three schools, post office, few shops, swimming pool, fitness centre and many parks.

Church of England

The exact date when this church was built is unknown, but there is evidence that this church existed in the late 12th century. This church now has some elements that date back from this time like the Norman doorway and the arcade from the 12th century. The chancel itself was rebuilt in the beginning of the 13th century. In the middle of the 19th century the church was rebuilt by J.W. Hugall who was a famous Gothic revival architect and it was dedicated to All Saints.

This church exists since the 17th century and serves a small number of believers.

Woodhenge

Woodhenge is a Neolithic henge monument which represents a timber circle. It is located very close to Stonehenge. Woodhenge was discovered in 1925 thanks to an aerial archeology survey led by Alexander Keiller. There are several rings of postholes.

Durrington Walls

This is another Neolithic site in Durrington. A recent excavation has found six houses from this period. Scientists believe that this place was one home to more than 1000 families making it the largest settlement from the Neolithic period in northern Europe.

Stonehenge

Stonehenge is located just 2 miles from Durrington. This is one of the most famous prehistoric monuments that has puzzled many scientists because of its specific appearance.
