Flower Delivery to Buckden with Clare Florist

Buckden is located in Cambridgeshire and is a part of the Huntingdonshire historic county. It’s the name of both the village and the civil parish, the latter of which includes the hamlets of Hardwick and Stirtloe. The River Great Ouse lies to the east of the parish, while the Great North Road used to cut through the village and pass through its centre. Today, the A1 road (which parallels the route of the Great North Road) lies at the west of the parish.

Buckden is an excellent place to visit when you need a quick escape from the city or want to have a weekend getaway with your family and friends. Its proximity to London, coupled with the fact that it has retained most of its original beauty and charm, makes it highly attractive to city dwellers.

Buckden in the Past

Buckden has been inhabited by humans for hundreds of years now. Archaeological evidence show that people have been living in the area since the Roman and Anglo-Saxon times.

In 1086, Buckden was mentioned in the Domesday Book, although it was spelled as “Bugedene” back then. (The place has gone through several variations of its name over the years — including Bugendena, Buggeden, Bukeden, Bokeden, and Bugden — and the current spelling entering common usage in the 18th century.) The Domesday Book noted that the village was a part of the Toseland hundred and had 58 households, which was very large at the time. It had 20 ploughlands, an 84-acre meadow, a church, a mill, and some woodland.

Buckden experienced economic growth during the 18th century mainly because of its proximity to the Great North Road. Four coaching inns were built in the parish, along with several public houses, and the residents soon became prosperous from the trade that developed in the area. The local economy slowed down soon after when railways were developed and the Great North Road was no longer in use.

Buckden in the Modern Times

Today, Buckden remains to be an excellent destination for those who want to relax and unwind without having to travel far. If you’re planning to spend some time in the village or parish, you’ll want to check out the Buckden Palace. It was one of the residences of the Bishop of Lincoln and also housed various royal figures including Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon. The Palace features beautiful gardens that bloom with Buckden flowers during springtime, making them a wonderful sight for sore eyes.

You’ll also want to explore the coaching inns that have become a huge part of the local history. The Spread Eagle has been transformed into a private house, but The Vine, The George, and The Lion Hotel are still in operation. Grab a bite to eat and enjoy a drink or two while you bask in the ambience of these historic buildings.
