Flower Delivery to Ashby Cum Fenby with Clare Florist

In the north east section of Lincolnshire there are a number of villages that dot the countryside. One of them that is quite typical of this particular area is Ashby cum Fenby, a seemingly unremarkable little town that is actually quite charming and representative of this particular area of Lincolnshire.

For over a thousand years, the village of Ashby cum Fenby has managed to survive the changing times and today is a popular attraction for tourists that are interested in this remarkable region of England. The village itself has about 250 residents and is located roughly five miles south of Grimsby and just to the east of A18 road.

The History of Ashby cum Fenby

The history of the Lincolnshire region itself goes back thousands of years with travellers through the area along with different tribes and peoples. As with most areas of England, the Romans went through this region roughly 2,000 years ago, although it is fair to say that Ashby cum Fenby was formed as we know it today long after the Romans left England.

It appears that Ashby cum Fenby was settled by the time William the Conqueror won the Battle of Hastings in 1066 AD. The village itself appears in the Doomsday Book which makes it roughly that age. What started as a few small huts grew over the first few hundred years to include the construction of an impressive church for the region.

The Ashby cum Fenby Grade II Anglican Church that is dedicated to St. Peter was originally constructed at some point in the 13th century. The church itself features an impressive early English tower that dominates one end. Plus, it offers an aisles, belfry, Perpendicular fort and decorated chancel. Beneath the tower can be found the remains of a rood screen while on the north aisle are monuments dedicated to Sir William Wray and his wife Francis, both of whom died in the 17the century. There is also a monument to Francis’ sister, Susanna Drury.

All in all, the village itself is very quaint and quiet which reflects much of the character of the North East Lincolnshire area. You can see in the rolling hills and nearby ocean the full measure of the countryside that shaped the growth of the region. Ashby cum Fenby is a village that offers a little insight into the rich history of this area while still living towards the future.
